Counting the exchange-side costs of every trip between a CEX and a DeFi wallet

Each round trip between an exchange and a DeFi wallet carries trading fees, spreads and withdrawal costs. Build a baseline for those exchange-side costs on Binance, OKX, Bybit or Bitget before planning protocol activity.

DeFi users tend to obsess over gas. They time transactions for quiet periods and compare network costs before every swap. Yet a large share of their total cost often sits elsewhere, on the centralised exchange where funds enter and leave the crypto world. Buying the asset, converting it to the token a protocol needs, withdrawing to a wallet and, weeks later, depositing back and selling all involve costs: trading fees, spreads on the pairs used and withdrawal fees per network. Because these are spread across several screens and statements, they rarely get added up. This guide shows how to build a simple baseline of exchange-side costs per round trip on Binance, OKX, Bybit or Bitget, using official fee information and your own records, so you can decide how often moving funds actually makes sense.

Map one complete round trip

Write down every step a typical cycle involves. For example: buy an asset with local currency, convert it to the token the protocol uses, withdraw on a chosen network, later deposit back, convert again and sell or withdraw to a bank. Each step has its own cost type. Seeing the full chain on paper reveals steps you may be able to remove, such as an unnecessary conversion, and gives you a framework for measuring what each part costs in practice rather than in theory.

Collect the official figures for your account

Sign in to each exchange and open its official fee page to note your maker and taker rates for the pairs you use. Then open the withdrawal screen for each token and network you rely on, and note the withdrawal fee and minimum shown at that moment. These figures change, so record the date. Avoid relying on fee tables posted in DeFi forums, which are often outdated or refer to a different account level. Your own snapshot is the starting point of a reliable baseline.

Measure spreads and conversions from your history

Fees are visible; spreads and conversion costs are less obvious. Take a recent round trip from your trade history and compare the average execution price of each trade with the mid price at the time, if you noted it, or with the best bid and ask you saw. Conversion features that quote a single price may include a spread in that quote. Add these differences to the explicit fees. Many users find the spread on less liquid pairs outweighs the trading fee itself.

Turn the baseline into a decision rule

Add up all exchange-side costs for one complete cycle and express them as a share of the amount moved. Compare that with the return you realistically expect from the protocol over the period, after gas. If the round trip consumes a large part of the expected benefit, consider moving funds less often, consolidating transfers or choosing a network with lower withdrawal cost that your wallet supports. Update the baseline every few months, since schedules and your account tier can change.

Scenario checkpoint

  • Write out every step of a typical round trip between the exchange and your DeFi wallet before measuring costs.
  • Record maker and taker rates and per-network withdrawal fees from each exchange's official screens with the date.
  • Estimate spreads and conversion costs from real trades in your history rather than assuming fees are the whole cost.
  • Compare total round-trip costs with expected protocol returns and reduce the frequency of transfers if needed.
