Exchange account security for people who also use DeFi wallets
People who spend time in DeFi often focus on wallet security: hardware devices, careful approvals, separate addresses. The exchange account they use to buy and withdraw is treated as an afterthought. Yet it is frequently the easiest part to attack, because it is connected to your email, your phone number and your bank. This guide explains which exchange controls matter most for someone who moves funds between an exchange and self-custody wallets.
Protect the entrance: email and password
Use a unique, long password from a password manager and secure the linked email with its own strong second factor. If the email falls, the exchange can often be reset. Avoid using the same email for newsletters of protocols and for your exchange, since mailing lists leak and attract targeted phishing.
Choose a strong second factor
Use an authenticator app or a passkey rather than SMS alone. Store the backup key offline. Keep these on a device that does not also hold your wallet's recovery material, so that one compromise cannot open both.
Use withdrawal controls
Enable the withdrawal address whitelist and add only addresses you control, such as your own wallets. Adding a new address normally triggers extra checks, which slows an attacker. Review the list regularly and remove old entries. Check the help centre for the current behaviour of this feature.
Beware targeted phishing
DeFi users are targeted with fake support messages, fake airdrop sites and wallet-connect prompts. Never enter exchange credentials on a page reached through a message, and never sign a transaction you do not understand. Keep exchange and wallet activity on separate browser profiles to reduce the chance of cross-contamination.
A quarterly check
Every quarter, review your exchange security settings next to your wallet setup: authentication method, whitelist, trusted devices, active sessions and the email protecting everything. Update your paper note with the date. Treat any unexplained login alert as a reason to change your password immediately from a device you trust and to contact official support.
Risk boundary: DeFi Protocols Hub
Digital assets are volatile and derivatives can amplify losses. This website has no login, wallet connection, deposit form or customer-support chat. A referral link only records attribution; it does not guarantee access, pricing, rewards, approval or investment results. Availability can differ by residence, legal entity and product, so no regional access is assumed from language or branding alone.
Scenario checkpoint
- Secure the exchange email with its own strong second factor
- Use an authenticator app or passkey and store backups offline
- Whitelist only withdrawal addresses you control
- Use separate browser profiles for exchange and wallet activity
- Never sign or enter credentials from links in messages
